Completed in 2006, "Head and Heart" was produced as a student recruitment tool for the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley. It was an interesting challenge because the budget was seriously limited and we had only two days of shooting. A decision was made to focus primarily on the experiences of two FST students, a woman studying to become a hospital chaplain, and a friar from Mexico who is working closely to provide pastoral care to a group of fairly destitute day laborers. It was important to give potential viewers a feel for the character of the school which is, of course, imbued in the tradition and humanistic philosophy of St. Francis of Assisi. Since many students come from out of state, it was also important to locate the school in Berkeley, CA, and to establish it as part of a larger consortium of theological institutions which are situated in the same neighborhood and whose facilities are available to FST students. The resulting program evolved into something quite moving, so much so that the Trustees of FST are distributing it widely not only for student recruitment, but also as part of their development efforts.
